Editorial Reviews

This cinematic masterpiece is the brilliant portrayal of legendary Irishman Christy Brown (Daniel Day-Lewis) who, despite crippling cerebral palsy, learned to use his one controllable extremity -- his left foot -- to become an accomplished artist and writer. The Miramax Collector’s Series proudly presents the release of the acclaimed motion picture that won Academy Awards® in 1989 for Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis) and Best Supporting Actress (Brenda Fricker) and earned Oscar(R) nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay (1989). This special edition of MY LEFT FOOT has been digitally remastered and features a wealth of bonus material never before available on DVD!

Daniel Day-Lewis won a much-deserved Oscar for his wily, passionate performance as Irish artist and writer Christy Brown, whose cerebral palsy kept him confined to a wheelchair. Filmmaker Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father) adapts Brown's own autobiography for this spirited piece, focusing on the sometimes-difficult fellow's formative years in his large family and in love with sundry women. Day-Lewis is inspired, and Brenda Fricker (also a recipient of an Oscar for her part in this movie) is almost luminous as Christy's dedicated mother. So, too, are Ray McAnally as the hero's stormy father, and Hugh O'Conor (The Young Poisoner's Handbook) as the child Christy. All in all, this is a complete pleasure for viewers. --Tom Keogh

This film is a must see for anyone who believes in the celebration of the human spirit and its ability to overcome almost insurmountable obstacles. Daniel Day- Lewis is amazing in this role - you forget that he is an actor playing a role. The bonus features in this film with shots of the real Christy Brown and his mother make the experience of watching this film even richer. This is a film you can watch over and over again and never tire of the amazing story it tells.

I went to the theatre many years ago to see this film, it was awesome then and it still is. I purchased this video for a friend who had never seen it before. They also really enjoyed it.

kind of a gritty movie

A poor Irish family has more room for the cripple than most rich families ever make.
A man who paints with his left foot and learns to talk at 19 is
someone who is entirely different than ordinary people.
What is inside his head is not reflected by how he is able to move
his body. Once he learns to type there seems to be no stopping him?
Daniel Day-Lewis has been one of my favorite actors since I saw
The Last of the Mohicans (Director's Expanded Edition).
Bringing to life this special person makes him a special actor.
It seems strange that out of such a gritty grinding poor
place should come a picture of courage and endurance for us all.
